Guidebook to Geology of the Waynesville, Rolla and St. James Areas, Missouri

Author: A. C. Spreng & Paul Dean Proctor

Publisher: University of Missouri, Rolla, 1993

Size: 8.5' x 11", Paperback, 97 pages

The initial version of this guidebook to the Rolla areas was prepared for the 1972 meeting of the Association of Missouri Geologists and has been reprinted four times. Since then, some roadways have been changed necessitating revisions in the guidebook. This second edition also includes new stops and new data.

The field trip is mainly along or near Interstate Highway 44, where the best and most accessible exposures in the Rolla area occur. The two road logs in the guidebook were planned so that they cover all stratigraphic units exposed in the area. The trip requires about one day.

The guidebook includes a brief discussion on sink structures, which are prominent in this and other parts of the Ozarks. Maramec Spring, an example of the springs in the area, is described and included among field trip stops. Economic geology was more important in the past, but for greater completeness pyrite and iron and clay mining are discussed.

Primary and secondary structural features of the sedimentary rocks in the area are illustrated by photographs in a final section of the guidebook.

The starting point for both trips is the McNutt-Stonehenge parking lot on the University of Missouri-Rolla campus.
