About Mammals and How They Live

Author: Charles W. Schwartz & Elizabeth R. Schwartz

Publisher: Missouri Department of Conservation, 1993

Size: 8.5' x 11", Paperback, 191 pages

This book was developed as a companion volume to "The Wild Mammals of Missouri. "1 But since that previously published book was somewhat restricted geographically, the current one has been expanded to include all wild, land~dwelling mammals of North America north of Mexico. Domestic mammals and mammals adapted to life in the ocean and adjacent fresh-water estuaries are excluded except for an occasional reference. These latter are the whales and dolphins (Order Cetacea); the seals, sea lions and walruses (Order Pinnepedia); the West Indian Manatee (Order Sirenia); and the Sea Otter (Order Carnivora). And because this is a companion volume, species mentioned in the first book are identified by an asterisk in the appendix. The emphasis of the text is on observing the habits and behavior of mammals; only occasionally is some physiological aspect included. And to make the information available to all reading levels, relatively few technical terms are included.
