Lepidoptera-butterflies and moths-are often described as "living jewels," and certainly, many Missouri species rival jewels in their fascinating array of patterns and sparkling colors. They have been popularized in poetry and song and used in decorating everything from wallpaper to teacups. Short of a general awareness, though, the average person has little knowledge of this interesting group of insects.
There are as many species of Lepidoptera in Missouri as there are plants, but while the flora of our state is well known, the Lepidoptera are not. The life histories, habits, distribution and food plants of many species are vet unknown. Several species new to science have been found recently in Missouri, and others surely await discovery. There is a real opportunity here for the amateur naturalist to make important contributions to our knowledge of the Lepidoptera of Missoun.
All butterflies for which there seem to be valid records have been included in the text and illustrated in color, Because of the great number of moths found in the state, it was only possible to treat about one species in twenty in this book. Selections were based on several factors. Some were chosen because they are common species likely to be seen by many people; others are economic pests or have unusual and interesting habits. A few were included simply because they are beautiful. Range, habits and status of each species are included. Larval food plants and brief dcscniptions of the mature larvae are given where known. Size variation is given in inches and refers to the distance between wing tips of specimens spread as illustrated.
