Missouri Speleological Survey

Files Report for March and April 2005

Randy Long of the Forest Service turned in a cd full of reports and photos on FS caves all over the place. Some of these (perhaps six) are new caves. This continues the fine tradition of material coming from the Forest Service.

And here comes more new caves from Randy: one in Pulaski County that we had a lead on for a while, plus others in Carter, Wayne, Ripley, Shannon, and Oregon Counties. And Randy sent some more reports on FS caves in Callaway County as well.

Dan Lamping sent in a better cave location for a cave in Shannon County.

John George of the Department of Conservation sent in locations of two smallish, new bluff caves in Boone County. These need mapping and won’t take long if someone would take half an afternoon.

NPS rangers Brett Painter and Mark Miller turned in a new cave they found in a side hollow off of the upper Jacks Fork River.

Joe Proffitt of Ft. Leonard Wood sent in three new cave locations from the Fort lands. Pulaski County now has 345 caves.

How many did I say? ‘Cause here are four more new caves in Pulaski from Kirsten Alvey and Steve Taylor. Make that 349 with a few more pending. And Steve sent a pile more locations from Boone, Cole, and Cooper Counties.

Jon Beard sent a nice report on Garrison Cave #2, which was badly needed. A lot of impressive work has been done in this challenging cave.

Mike Flannigan continues to send us leads on interesting occurrences and locales that he has researched.

Mick Sutton sent a report and clarification on the confusing Dabner Bluff area of Ozark County. All of the caves previously reported there have now been found plus a few new ones. Ozark County now has 79 known caves, and probably a few hundred that haven’t been found…

Leonard Butts sent a file of exact cave locations for St. Louis City. He did this by taking the street locations, finding them on the computer topos and recording the waypoints. He was aided by his vast knowledge of city streets, having worked for the gas company for all those years. Then I took the file he sent with the accession numbers and UTM locations and imported them into the main Missouri Cave Database. La voila! Now we have a lot of point locations for the city caves. Refined they are not but much better than they were.

Ben Miller and I found a nice new cave in the Ozark Riverways. More on that later…

The cave files will be alive and well at the Spring MSS meeting this week.

Apologies as always to those individuals who have sent info and I forgot to note.
