Missouri Speleological Survey
Files Report for March 2003

-While searching for a cave to census bats in, Mick Sutton and I found three new caves in Texas County on the Jacks Fork River. One of them had an entrance 35’ wide by 5’ high and is less than 150’ from the river. And this was in an area that I had already searched. Which goes to show that you should never quit looking for new caves.

-Dan Lamping is the new MSS rep for MVG and he started his participation by sending the location of a new cave in Jefferson County that he has been pushing. So far it’s 150ft of “nasty stream passage.”

-Michael Carter sent in a list of errors that he caught in the Shannon County files.

-Mick Sutton sent a correction to a cave’s directions. This sort of thing really helps. And he sent in a question on some numbering problems.

-Jon Beard sent the location and description of a new cave in Dallas County. He also sent notes and clarifications on some other cave names.

-Ben Miller sent in locations of four new caves in Stone County. And then he sent in two more. And then he sent in three more. All are results of his work on the Reeds Spring, Spokane, and Galena quads. He also sent in the location of a new cave in Boone County as well.

-Tim Harrison sent in locations and descriptions of several new caves in Shannon County on Pioneer Forest land. Lots of hard work went into searching this rugged terrain. Credit Tim, Tom Panian, Rick Haley and others working on that project.

-Gary Johnson and Jeff Page sent in descriptions, topo maps, photos and locations for a possible new cave in Texas County. It appears, however, that it is already in the records and mapped. But the descriptions, more accurate locations, and photographs are important contributions to the files. Thanks guys!

-Jerry Vineyard sent, via Sharon Hankins, some copies of old Ozarks Undergrounds that had undocumented caves in them. I’ve been in contact with Springfield folks seeing if someone can locate these caves before they are totally forgotten.

-Jim Ruedin and Doug Wessel sent, via Randy Long of the USFS, reports on two caves in Oregon and Ripley Counties.

-Bob Taylor and Jon Beard sent information relating to missing and duplicate caves in the Springfield area. In one instance a cave was in the database under two different, but similar, names and had been for many, many years. Another case involved a cave that was written up as Cave X but then was catalogued eventually as Cave Y. Yet another was mapped and reported on but the location of the cave had been lost at some point.

And already material is flowing in for next month. Keep up the good work and keep sending in material folks!
