Missouri Speleological Survey
Files Report for January - March 2010

The new decade was off with a bang as another digital pile of maps, reports, and locations flooded in.
The morning of the MSS meeting was spent deep in Greene County as a large group of SPG cavers plus yours truly worked
through location and names problems. We got about halfway done with this initial pass. Folks participating included Jon
Beard, Bob Taylor, Max White, Jerry Vineyard, Jack Rosenketter, and Roy Gold. We didn't track how many changes were made
but suffice to say that tens of cave locations were improved upon. As usual in these sessions, a numeric value was given to
the quality of these locations. This is a system that works well and has resulted in the improvement of, literally, more
than a thousand locations across the state.
Joe Walsh sent emails with info on yet another cave in Ste Genevieve that has pretty much escaped attention for decades.
Chad McCain and Kris Hartman are following up on it, and they have apparently relocated it.
Philip Moss sent a GPS (much improved) location for a pit in the Sereno area of Perry County. Philip also sent two photos
of the entrance.
Stan Sides sent three location improvements from Perry County. Stan also sent along information on two caves on the upper
drainage of Berome Moore. Aaron Addison added more information to this, including a known secondary entrance to Berome.
Hal Baker sent a detailed 32-page report on his geologic investigations in Powder Mill Creek Cave. And he promises a Part 2
as well.
Jon Beard sent in a location for Welch Spring Cave. No, not that one, this is a new one that he and Max White found in
Greene County. Later, Jon sent locations for six new caves in Greene County which were actually located and GPS'ed by Eric
Hertzler and Bob Taylor.
James "Doc" Price of Ozark Riverways sent a bit of information on the unfortunate incident several years ago that resulted
in Rattlesnake Cave getting its name.
Ben Miller sent maps of Haugworts Cave (surveyed by Ben and Emma Franklin) in Stone County and Orr Spring Cave (636ft long,
by Ben, Joe Berg, Greg Hanson, and Cameron Sanders) in Crawford County. Later Ben also sent a map of a small pit in Boone
County surveyed by he and Bob Lerch.
Jim Cooley sent a nice pair of maps (one color, one black and white) of Coffin Cave in Mark Twain NF land, Oregon County,
surveyed by Jim, DJ Hall, and Dale Curtis. Jim also sent information on a new cave on MTNF land, Hobo Home.
Eric Hertzler sent a nice map of Fantastic Collapse Cave, a short but interesting new cave in Greene County that he and Jon
Beard surveyed.
Amy Crews (not that other Crews) sent a nice map of Bowlman Cave on Mark Twain NF land in Texas County surveyed by Amy,
Spike, Andy Free, Anna Ford, and I.
Joe Nicolussi sent information on a new survey of Money Cave, DNT
Paul Hauck sent in a new cave location in Perry County, and he followed that up with a map of the same cave which is in the
Crevice/Mertz drainage. Plus photos and a descriptive trip report.
Kris Hartman and Chad McCain turned in a new pit in Ste. Genevieve County. Chad followed this up with a nice detailed trip
report on the new pit. Chad also sent some information on the depth of the Echo Pit entrance to Crevice Cave, which taped
out to 127 ft. Edmund Tucker followed this up with photos of a side passage off of the pit, which has now been mapped.
Edmund also sent GPS locations on several caves in eastern Perry County.
Chad sent some more reports, odds and ends, on caves in SGE. And he found a new cave in Oregon County. Not known how big
because it is on USFS land and he will have to wait until April to enter. Chad also sent information on a couple of new
caves in Perry County.
Kris Hartman sent along a Google earth image with the cave passage line plot from the large cave they are working on in
Ste. Genevieve County.
Aaron Addison sent a map and location of Cherry Hole in Perry County. He did the map some years ago but it got lost
somewhere along the files route.
Jim Cooley typed in Benton County for the files. This was a heap of work, but it gives us yet another county that is all in
the database.
Patti House (yes, related to me) typed in a big (like 30) pile of reports from MDC and DNR caves.
Kiley Bush of MSM sent a GPS location for a known cave in Phelps County via Spike Crews.
A bunch more information came in during this time period but I didn't get to all of it so it will appear in the next files
report.
