Files Report for April - June 2010
Picking
up where we left off and busy as usual:
Jon
Beard sent a location for a cave in Greene
County (now up to 382
caves) that Charity Hertzler found references to and
Eric and Jon went out and confirmed. Jon also sent a series of communications
that perhaps, for all time, cleared up a confusing mess involving a series of
natural bridges and associated caves in Greene County.
And Jon sent in locations for two new caves, one in Greene County
and the other in Dade. Lastly Jon sent in a final draft of Johnson Cave,
in Greene County. While attending one of the
seemingly endless WNS meetings, I met with SPG folks (usual suspects – Taylor,
Beard, Gold, Rosenkoetter) to do something useful; in
this case educate them in the use of the FileMaker database and hand over the
operative copy of Greene County for them to work on in the coming months.
Zach
Copeland sent in his first cave map (that he kept book on) which is Danger Cave
#2. Beings that he mapped it with Eric and Jon, I can think of lots of
potential dangers.
James Corsentino sent in a report on a Pulaski County
Cave .
Joe
Light sent in information on a St.
Louis City
cave.
Kris
Hartman sent a preliminary map of a cave in Perry County . He allows that there is lots more passage which they have
not yet surveyed, but he wanted to get what he had finished
in. This is a good idea. Many of us have partially finished maps out there –
with digital drafting, you can always turn in what you have and finish the
things in your second life… Kris also sent an updated length for Blackfathom
River Cave .
Kris also sent a series of reports on a rediscovered cave in Ste. Genevieve
County that has considerable promise. And Kris sent a nice map and a pile of
photos of a pit cave in SGE
County. Kris also reports
that Blackfathom
River is now up to ~ 5
miles in surveyed length.
Edmund
Tucker sent photos of Soehl
Cave in Perry County . And Chad McCain sent a location for a small cave very
near the Soehl entrance. Edmund also sent some GPS
locations for caves near 76.
Randy
Long sent in a couple of nice reports on USFS caves he had visited.
Jim
Cooley sent GPS locations and maps of Reary Outlook
Tunnel and Reary Hole, both in Ozark Riverways land, Shannon
County, and a map of Kolb Cave in
Camden County. Jim also turned in several cave
locations from along the Current River ,
Ozark NSR, in Dent and Shannon
Counties . He and Joe
Williams located these caves utilizing a canoe… Jim sent in several new
caves from Oregon
County, on Mark Twain NF
land. And he followed this up with nice map, report, and photograph of Knob Cave
in the Riverways.
Eric Hertzler sent a nice map of Hercules
Lookout Tower
Cave , on Mark Twain NF land in Taney County
. Eric also sent a new, very nice map of Panther Cave, Franklin County which is
either in Meramec SP or on MDC land (probably MDC but
usually attributed to SP). Eric followed that up with maps of Turner Cave , Fantastic Collapse, Franklin
Cave , and Dripping
Dome Cave
all in Greene County and all part of the SPG project
to identify, report, and map everything in the county.
Eugene
Vale sent a pile of revised locations from Meramec State Park along with anecdotal notes on
where they are located. This really helps the continuing effort to get all of
those caves correctly located.
Stan
Sides sent more information on a cave entrance in Perry County .
Ben
Miller sent in a location correction for Boone
County, new caves from Boone and Camden Counties,
and a map of Little Dome Cave, Boone County.
Ben also sent in a new cave location from Taney
County and another from Stone County,
and a nicely detailed report on various caves in Roaring River SP that he
visited and mapped recently. Ben followed these submissions up with maps of
Little Dome Cave, Devil’s Icebox/Deer Leap Cave, Patton
Cave, Eagle
Nest Cave,
and High Hill
Pit Cave
(all from Roaring River) plus Hudson
Cave and Crickets
Lair Cave,
both in Stone County. Ben followed all this up with
six nice reports on caves in Stone and Taney Counties.
Steve Paes and Rhonda Rimer, both of
MDC, sent in a location for a new cave in Ripley County
that Steve found.
Bob Osburn sent a location improvement and brief description
for a cave in Carter
County .
Chad
McCain sent a detailed description of the cleanup at Buddys
(Arnolds) Cave in Ste
Genevieve County.
Chad
also sent a detailed trip report on the mapping of Sediment Pit in the same
county.
Philip
Moss sent an improved location for Berome
Moore Cave
and associated features from Perry
County .
Gary
Johnson sent in a pile of revised locations and new caves from both Hickory and Camden
Counties .
Mick
Sutton sent an improved location for Texas
County.
Bob Criss sent a location and report on a new cave in St. Louis County on an MDC conservation area.
Mike
Tennant sent a couple of GPS locations for caves on the Jacks Fork and a
location and survey notes for a St.
Charles County Cave.
I have
had lots of correspondence in the inbox: sometimes these are inquiries from
landowners seeking help (one person in Hickory County enlisted the help of both
SPG and KCAG, another wants to know what to do about a pit on his property);
some are from legitimate researchers and others are from people that just want
information on caves, and so forth.
Roy
Gold sent in a location and photo of the new cave in Hickory County
mentioned above.
Bob
Taylor sent a revised location plus two spring locations in Dallas County.
And Bob -sent in a map of the elsewhere-mentioned cave in Hickory County.
Wife
Patti typed in a large number of reports from various sources and various
counties; mostly from state parks where we have made an effort to update the
files.
