Cave Map Files Report

In 2006, I found a pile of problem maps and files that had
never been resolved. Here is the progress that has been made thus far:
Old maps that have been added in 2006
·
Arch Cave (collapsed) (1972) CHR121 – Jon Beard submitted location
·
Nameless Cave (1975) DNT030 –
Secondary name of Black #3
·
Vine Shelter (1987) was found in the paper files. The map was never
processed. It has been scanned and added.
·
Bailey Pit CSLxxx – This was a cave report from 1994 that was never
processes. It is being assigned a MSS
number, and the map has been submitted.
·
Slot Cave map (1973) was found in the correspondence files and matches
the description of Trapper Cave CFD104. Mapped by D. Crawl of the Mid-Illinois
Grotto.
·
Stockade Cave (1973) was found in the correspondence files CFD166.
Mapped by D. Crawl of the Mid-Illinois Grotto.
·
Forbidden Cave (1974) OZK166 was found in the correspondence files.
Mapped by D. Crawl of the Mid-Illinois Grotto.
·
Griggs Farm Cave #1 and #2 (1987) WSH072 and WSH073 were found in a
pile of stuff. They needed the accession
number added to the map.
·
Half Mile Cave (1994) MDD 016 – found in pile of files. Needed to be
scanned.
·
A partial map of Predicted Cave was found in ‘the pile’ by Paul
Hauck. Paul has sent a copy of the full
map.
·
A map and description of Freeze’ur Cave OZK047 was found in the Crawford
Co correspondence files. This map was just recently re-located. Its location
has been unknown to CRF and MTNF until recently.

Red Bluff Cave – was labeled as Finning Hole Cave with the wrong
accession number
·
Dust Cave, Dry Fork Creek Cave and Indian Hill Caves in Dent County
were misnamed
·
Little Shawnee Shelter was changed from SHN138 to SHN180 in the map
database and the map was edited to reflect changed. This was done based on an
email from 2002 from S. House, which was never tended to.
·
Stroup Cave was mislabeled and SHN477, but ti is SHN135. This was also
in the same email as above.
·
Crane Creek Cave map STN159 was in a pile of unprocessed stuff. The MSS number on the map was wrong, so it
has been edited to STN065 and the database has been updated.
·
Carr Cave SHN-
Other
errors found that have not yet been corrected
·
McCormack Cave SHN xxx - There is no paper file but there is
a map in MSS Cave. Scott House was notified.
·
A map of Carr Cave was found, and it is labeled as SHN103. However, SHN103 is not Carr Cave. The proper MSS number must be determined and
the map fixed
·
Little Seep Cave SHN315 – There is a map in the database and there is a
digital version, but the paper file and the original map are missing.
·
LAW 035 is in the map database, but there is no map found.
·
STN 239 has two maps and two different caves done in 2004 and 2005

There are other cave files (not map related) things
found in the ‘pile’, which I have been working with Scott House on.
I
have begun a ‘correspondence file’ review.
I will be going through the correspondence files and looking for maps and
leads that were misplaced. This has been completed through Crawford so
far. It has resulted in more leads being
added, and even some new maps.
Spike
has gone through the map database and corrected many mislabeled file names,
eliminated duplicate maps, added surveyed length if the data was available on
the map, and checked that all maps have the proper MSS # on them (yes he opened
up every single cave map). He is also
looking at digital maps for drafting errors.
He has made a list of over compressed jpegs that caused compression
artifact such as gray fuzz around black lettering.
